Pageantry

I began my Costume Design Career with the world of Pageantry—specifically Color Guard. Also known as “The Sport Of The Arts” Color Guard is a mix of Dance, Music, and Athleticism. Color Guard has its origins in the military, where soldiers would literally “guard” the colors (The flag) with sabers and rifles. Flags, rifles, and sabers are spun to music, with the addition of dance and theatrical storytelling and thematic costuming. Between 2005 and 2017 I worked at a company that manufactures color guard costumes for High School and Independent competitive groups around the world.

THe Day I Found You

Set in a fictional paradise, The Day I Found You is a romantic story with a sweeping, dramatic soundtrack. For the costumes, I imagined Greek goddesses lounging in an oasis, wearing sheer draped layers in watery greens that move sensually as they dance.

A WEST COAST STORY

A West Coast Story is inspired by the sounds and visuals of the classic musical West Side Story. This version is set in a futuristic urban environment. The complimentary blue/orange color palette is accented with silver metallic references to chain link fence set pieces the cast danced through, climbed, and leapt over.

AND STILL I RISE

Inspired by the phoenix rising from the ashes, And Still I Rise is about shedding baggage that weighs us down. The costumes are meant to evoke feelings of being bound and dragged down by expectations, fears, negative past experiences… but in motion, they add a stunning visual effect. In the end, we emerge transformed, powerful, and our pure selves.

Rebirth: A Symphonic Motion

Rebirth: A Symphonic Motion is an aggressive show with a sense of expressing the fire beneath the surface. The costume design is inspired by the cracked appearance of the glowing magma beneath the surface of cooled lava. We also explored the idea of dragon’s scales as a design motif of the design. The crackled fabric texture was cut and tattered as if the dragon’s skin was shedding/ revealing the fire beneath.
