King John
Presented by Upstart Crow Collective in partnership with Actor's Theatre of Louisville as part of the Bingham Signature Shakespeare Series.
upstart crow collective produces classical plays with racially diverse casts of women and non-binary people, re-imagining these works for a contemporary audience.
This production originated at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the original costume design is by the incredible Melissa Torchia. She and I worked together on another project, and when this show moved to Louisville, she called upon me to be her associate. In my role as Associate Costume Designer, I worked with the costume shop at Actors Theatre to replicate 3 of the original costumes for the recast actors in the new production, and to build newly redesigned pieces for two of the core characters. Luckily several of the original cast members returned, and we were able to utilize their previous costumes for this version of the show.
As Associate Costume Designer, I was able to make decisions on Melissa’s behalf, manage fabric/materials procurement, run costume fittings, and make adjustments according to Melissa’s original design language. It was also my honor to be hired as a draper/stitcher at Actors Theatre, where I built and altered two pieces for this production.

Arthur's Coat. This costume was redesigned from the original OSF production. Due to time and budget constraints, we decided to source an existing coat and alter it to fit within the design. I found this gorgeous wool coat that presented several opportunities for transformation.

Constance's Dress. For most of her time onstage, Constance is seen in her full length, green military-style coat, with this simple, black dress peeking out from between long vents. The dress is made of black cotton jersey. The cowl neck resolves in the back of the dress and meets at the keyhole back.
